LEAGUE OF NATIONS’ UNION

ACTIVITIES OF PAST YEAR. INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP. A steady increase in membership in the Masterton branch of the Leagueof Nations Union is recorded in the annual report, which will be presented at the annual meeting to be held on Monday nighE. At the end of the year the membership totalled 88 and the branch now had two groups attached to it, the Masterton branch of the Women’s Division and the Carterton Women’s Labour League. The secretary was responsible for forming a branch of the Junior Goodwill Club in the Whatman Home and arrangements were made for over 200 children at Wairarapa College, 25 at Solway College and about 15 adults and girls at Gladstone School to correspond with those in other countries. Two debates were held during the year, in one of which two graduates of Le Moyne University. Tennessee, took part. The secretary reported having delivered fourteen lectures. From the proceeds of the three shop days, a sum of £2O was allotted to Madame Chiang Kai-shek's appeal, £6 12s 9d to the Save the Children International Fund, for the adoption of a Russian boy; £5 to the fund for the relief of Spanish children; £1 to the War Refugees' Home; £2 to headquarters, London, and £2 10s to Dominion headquarters, making a total of £35 10s._ Literature was distributed to various bodies. Representations had been made regarding the International Youth Movement. Summing up the year’s work, the report states that the most outstanding features were a hardening of public opinion in support of the league or a kindred organisation; the keenness and enthusiasm of members and an obvious desire on the part of residents generally to hear the opinions of those from other countries and to extend them the hand of fellowship.
