MUSSOLINI’S REPLY TO HITLER COMMENT IN WASHINGTON. DOOR OPEN FOR DISCUSSION. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. NEW YORK, April 21. The Washington correspondent of the "New York Times” says that Signor Mussolini 15 'speech is believed to have left the door open for discussions for peaceful adjustments of the European situation. It is pointed out that Signor Mussolini struck at a straw man when he condemned the idea of a large conference, since President Roosevelt suggested a number of small conferences. It was realised, however, that the real reply to President Roosevelt would come from Herr Hitler and that Signor Mussolini’s speech would not be regarded seriously.
There v.as gratification at least that the dictator- were still talking and not relapsing .= to an ominous silence that might rz .ne prelude to armed action.
