WEST SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL EFFORT. The success of the recent carnival at West School, by which a sum of £BB 12s 9d was raised, was the subject of favourable comment at the monthly meeting of the West School Committee. The chairman, Mr F. Shearer presided. The committee expressed its thanks to Mr E. R. Rogers and other members of the committee, the teachers and all who assisted to make the carnival such a success. The headmaster, Mr D. S. Rust, who tendered his resignation on account of his appointment to the Seatoun School, thanked the comipittee for its consideration and assistance during his term of office. He said he would always take a keen interest in the school. He regretted his departure, as he was leaving many friends. Mr Shearer thanked Mr Rust’ for his services. The committee, parents and children were all sorry that he was leaving, as he had shown much ability in organising school activities. Mr E. Tooby considered that a protest should be entered against the constant changes that were taking place in the teaching staff of the school. Mr Shearer explained the position at some length, pointing out that the chief difficulty resulted from the fact that many children attending the Side School did not continue their schooling at West, but at some other school. The headmaster reported the roll number to be 342. Nothing further had been heard regarding the demolition of the condemned building. Mr Rust said a tine spirit prevailed at Wairarapa College, where the West School teachers and children were receiving every consideration and assistance from the principal and teaching staff of the College.' He asked that his appreciation should be recorded on the minutes.
The committee agreed to accept the invitation of Mr G. G. Hancox, principal of Wairarapa College, for West School pupils to attend the Anzac Day ceremony to be held on Monday. Arrangements were made for the heating of the rooms occupied by West School pupils at the College. The planting of trees around the baths was left in the hands of the chairman. NEW BUILDING. INTENTION OF MINISTER. “The Minister's intention is to have a new school ready for occupation after the next Christmas vacation,” said Mr J. Robertson, M.P., this morning, when asked if there were any developments in connection with the Masterton West School. Mr Robertson added that the Minister was quite definite that a new building would be erected, as it would be almost as costly to repair the existing building.
