CANADA’S MANY ATTRACTIONS. SEVENTEEN MILLION TOURISTS IN A YEAR. , OTTAWA. The charms of Canada as a vacation land and the lure of her hunting and fishing grounds attracted more than 17,000.000 tourists to the Dominion in 1938. It is estimated that these visitors spent approximately 269,000,000 dollars in Canada for goods and services, including 600,000 dollars for shooting and fishing licences and 25,000,000 dollars for sporting goods, the services of guides and the rental of canoes, tents and equipment. While most of these tourists entered Canada from the United States, many of them came from abroad. Government figures show that 15.463 travellers from overseas countries entered the Dominion during the year at the various Atlantic and Pacific ports. In addition, many of Canada’s visitors entering by automobile or train from the United States came from countries as far away as South America, India, Hawaii, and Continental Europe. Official figures show that 3.476,405 tourists entered Canada in 1938 by railway, bus, ferry and aeroplane. Automobiles admitted entry into Canada on two-day permits numbered 3.081.559. those on 60-day passes totalled 1,263.509, and those for a period not exceeding six months 1,577.
