POPPY DAY APPEAL.

AMIDST all the changes that, the post-war years have witnessed, the red poppy retains its significance as a commemorative symbol of the sacrifices made in the Great M ar, and use continues to be found, here and elsewhere, for the proceeds derived from the sale of poppies in alleviating distress, during the winter months, amongst returned soldiers and their families. In appealing to the public to buy poppies in Masterton tomorrow, the Returned Soldiers’ Association has stated that even with the improvement in the economic conditions of the Dominion, there are always cases of distress which require assistance. It is not a happy state of affairs that is thus indicated and it may be worth .considering whether all cases of distress among returned soldiers and those dependent on them might not be provided for under the Social Security scheme. "The Returned Soldiers’ Association speaks, however, with responsibility and with an intimate knowledge of the facts in stating that needs exist which would go unsatisfied if the Poppy Fund were not available. In these circumstances it may be taken for granted that, as in past years, the Poppy Day appeal will awaken ready sympathy and that once again there will be a liberal response from those who are asked to buy a poppy and to wegj? it on Anzae Day.
