HAVE FAITH IN YOURSELF
-- DEVELOP YOUR PERSONALITY. “Stand in front of the mirror and study your face for ten minutes each day—in other words know thyself”— is one of the injunctions of an American society for self-development. As with a lot of advice that is given to girls, there is a point that one can appreciate, but it is easy to understand the feelings of one woman, who wrote, “I did it for three days and then got the ‘jitters.” What is equally understandable is the view that no girl need despair because she is not actually beautiful. In the first place all girls are entitled to make the most of themselves, which means taking advantage of all the dids to beauty that skilled experts have developed from the researches of science. Personality is far more important than mere prettiness. Any girl should try to sum herself up. She should ask herself the question: “How can I develop my personality?” There is little doubt that what is called the “inferiority complex” is often wrongly based upon the belief that others in one’s social group have gifts which are natural and therefore Overwhelming. Perish the thought! It is a matter of confidence and development, The personality that takes instant command is very rare and need not be considered. Even Madame Pompadour was trained for her part — the capture of a King’s heart —from her infancy. If you have some attractive person in mind do not slavishly copy her. Observe and take what is useful, but do riot submerge yourself. Build up on what is your own nature and adorn it mentally and physically. Hence, look as well as you can, read well, keep up to date, talk lightly, but do not chatter,, say something entertaining rather than persistently ask questions, get into your mind that you are as good as the next girl, take full advantage of fresh air and exercise, and your mirror and your mind will soon tell you that your quest has not been in. vain—you are developing your personality.
