APOLOGY TO GERMANY
MADE BY SOUTH AFRICA FOR MAYOR’S REFERENCES TO HITLER. NO REDRESS FOR NAZI ABUSE OF SMUTS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received This Day, IL3O a.m.) CAPE TOWN, April 18. The Prime Minister (General Hertzog) stated that the Government had officially apologised to Germany for uncomplimentary references made to Herr Hitler by the Mayor of Port Elizabeth at a meeting to raise funds for refugees. The Premier added that -legislation was being introduced shortly tp guard against the disturbance of relations with other States by making such attacks punishable. General Hertzog admitted that the Government had not asked for a German apology for vicious German newspaper attacks on General Smuts. Mr Charles Stallard, -Leader of the Dominion Party, placed the party at the Government’s disposal in the event of a crisis.
