BUSH FIRE OUT
EXTINGUISHED BY RAIN DURING NIGHT. TWO THOUSAND ACRES SWEPT AT CARRINGTON. The fire which raged in the foothills of the Tararuas at the head of the Carrington Settlement on Monday and Tuesday was extinguished last night by a fall of rain. Altogether, about 2000 acres were swept by flames, including about 500 acres of State Forest and 1500 acres of private property belonging to Messrs H. J. Dryden, Goodin and Mrs Anderson. Most of the area concerned was fern and second growth and according to very little virgin forest was destroyed. Fencing material and considerable lengths of fences were lost. The fire appeared to have started at the edge of the bush on the Totara Flat track. - Settlers in the vicinity had an anxious time when the fire was-at its height especially as a strong wind was blowing, causing the fire to spread towards occupied country. Fortunately, rain set in last night at about 11 o’clock and continued for the remainder of the night. This morning a distinct rainbow could be seen over the Tararuas from Masterton, indicating that the rain was continuing. Inquiries made this morning from Carrington settlers showed that the rain had extinguished the fire.
