ROAD CYCLING
WAIRARAPA CLUB. (Notes by “Three-Speed.”) The cycling season for the Wairarapa Club was opened on Saturday when the Masterton riders journeyed to Greytown to compete for the very fine trophy donated by Mrs A. J. Allison. Twelve riders faced the starter and Mr J. Robertson, M.P., declared the road season open when he pushed K. Gilbert, the limit man and a new rider to the club. Gilbert rode well for a first starter but would do much better with more training, and I think the more training part of it goes for all the riders. M. Graham, winner of the trophy, rode an excellent race to beat G. Goodin on the post and more will be heard of him during the season. _ G. Goodin, also a new rider this season, will make the riders travel when he gets more training and settles down. L. Green beat B. Dooling and C. Gourlay on the post to gain third place. The former also requires more training. B. Dooling and C. Gourlay rode well but are not yet fit. E. Lefort and O. Morris found the ride a -little hard for them.
J. McAliece and J. Brader found their task a difficult one, but kept going to be in the sprint with the scratch men who caught them about two miles from home. R. Copp and K. Woollett rode well to gain first and second fastest times respectively. Though they did not do as well as was expected they should improve soon. On the whole all the competitors rode very well, but they want to remember that training is essential to all riders in order to obtain that form which brings success in a race.
