PONGAROA

* ' GOLF CLUB SEASON. OPENED DURING WEEKEND. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Pongaroa Golf Club held its official opening during the weekend, there being a fair attendance, including a strong representation from the Waimiro Club. The club captain, Mr P. H. Donovan, in calling on the president to perform the opening ceremony, referred to the extreme dryness of the course, and said that the attendance was reduced by the fact that many members were still playing tennis and cricket. Mr A. M. Theed then declared the course open for the season. He welcomed visitors and new members. He pointed out that the minor alterations in hand on the course should increase the enjoyment of members. He partiI cularly referred to the excellent wok carried cut by a volunteer band of members, under the leadership of Mr G. J. Wilks, in enlarging and improving the clubhouse. A Canadian foursome was played, the winners being Messrs T. Pickett and S. W. Emerson; after which the lady members provided afternoon tea in the new clubhouse room. Cricket Match. Some weeks ago the Pongaroa Returned Soldiers’ Association visited Dannevirke and were successful in defeating a cricket team fielded by the Dannevirke Returned Soldiers’ Association. During the weekend the Dannevirke team played a return match in Pongaroa, but the local team, under the leadership of Mr H. Harold, again proved too strong, retaining the “Anderson Bat,” which was made and presented by Mr Les. Anderson, of Dannevirke. After the match the visitors were entertained by the Pongaroa team and Messrs F. Casey (president) and Mr Blomfield, on behalf of the Dannevirke Returned Soldiers’ Association, expressed their thanks for the enjoyable outing provided. Messrs A. M. Theed (president) and Mr H. Harold (vice-president) voiced the anpreciation of the Pongaroa Returned Soldiers’ Association for Dannevirk's enterprise in arranging the cricket matches, and the g'enerous assistance and support given to the local branch. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs A. O. Ferrick, who have been visiting Mr and Mrs S. F. Herbert, have returned to Wellington. Messrs R. O’Brien and W. McDonald left this morning for Christchurch. They intend spending three weeks touring in the southern districts.
