FARMERS’ UNION

MEETING OF ALFREDTON BRANCH. STABILISATION SCHEME FOR EWES. ("Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Alfredton sub-provincial branch of the Farmers’ Union was held at Alfredton last night, the president, Mr R. W. Kebbell presiding over a representative attendance of members. The chairman referred to the loss sustained by the branch and the district by the death of Mr CeciL Kebbell.

The election of officers resulted as follow: President, Mr R. W. Kebbell; vice-president, Mr John H. Macdonald; delegates to Wairarapa Provincial Executive, Messrs R. W. Kebbell, J. L. Heckler and J. H. Macdonald; branch secretary and treasurer, Mr H. C. George. . Mr L. T. Daniell was present and fully explained his stabilisation scheme as applied to ewes. The matter was debated at length by the meeting and many questions were asked: The following remitwhich was approved unanimously, was passed for submission to the conference: “That in view of the restrictions on the export of meat this branch advocates a universal levy of the necessary fraction of a penny per lb on all meat killed for the purpose of a stabilisation and compensation scheme.”

Other remits approved were: “That legislation be immediately brought down to protect the mortgagor from extreme action by the mortgagee, embracing stock firms, banks and private. lenders and that the Government reinstate the most efficient of the mortgage adjustment commissions to deal with all cases of hardships and that in the interests of all the commission’s findings be made retrospective.” “That steps be taken to make membership of the Farmers' Union compulsory for all farmers.”
