MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL. RECONSTRUCTION AND SEALING WORK. At a meeting of the finance committee of the Masterton County Council, held this morning, the tender of Messrs McCalmont Bros, was .accepted, for the construction of th’e Kafwhata' S’tfeam Bridge at Ngaha'pe "ail'd that of Mr S'. J. Clarke for road formation alid metalling th respect to Fenemor’s Road access, Kopparanga'., The action of the County Clerk, Mr J. C. D. Mackley, in inviting tenders for the supply and delivery of 1160’ cubic yards' of river gra'Vel on the Homewood, Kaiwh'ata and Riverside roads, was confirmed. Tenders would close on Friday. April 21. Messi's Seatoii, Sladden and Pavitt advised that amended specifications had been drawn up for the Tau’eru deviation on the Masterton-Castlepoint Main Highway and that fenders could be invited for the work. As the proposed new formation departed from the existing road practically throughout its length, metalling would have to be carried out simultaneously with the earthwork in order to keep the road open for traffic. If a contract were let for earthwork only the cost of providing temporarily for traffic would be excessive and the engineers recommended that the contract should be for the base course metalling. The top course metalling and shaping could then be carried out by the council when convenient. The Main Highways Board concurred in these views. The council approved the engineers’ recommendation and confirmed the Clerk’s action in inviting tenders for this work, tenders' to close at noon on Friday. April 28. Following on an inspection made by representatives of the Main Highways Board, together with members of the council, of all main highways in tl\ county to consider the standard-of reconstruction and the type of sealing work which should be adopted by the council in continuance of its policy of providing cl u\ less highways, the council went fully into the matter but no decision had been reached at the time of going to press. The council made a contribution oi £l5 towards the funds of. the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum. Accounts totalling £3931 15s lid were passed. _______
