April 17. .It is understood Rear-Admiral Byrd and Mr Lincoln Ellsworth have been asked to consult the Government concerning plans for an. official expedition .to' the South Polar regions, in order “to fasten down- American claims to potential resources in a region for which' an international rcZe is developing." A prominent member, of the Government explained: “Sooner or later there must be a conference to settle the question of international claims in this region. Britain, Germany, France, Norway and virtually every other nation are claiming something. The State Department has never recognised their claims' and we want to fasten down our jurisdiction' and obtain all possible data on the matter.”
