FIRE ON TARARUAS

PRIVATE AND CROWN AREAS SWEPT. THICK BLANKET OF SMOKE. All day yesterday a heavy pall of smoke hung over Carterton and district. The cause of the smoke was a fire in the hills behind Belvedere and Dalefield. The outbreak is supposed to have commenced in the Maungatariri Gorge. Judging by the dense smoke and the amount of burnt bracken and tree leaves that fell in Carterton, the fire was of considerable dimensions. The amount of damage will not be made known until the State Forest officers investigate. It is understood that the fire was largely centred in an area at the head of the Maungatariri Stream, where a fair area of private property, as well as portion of the State Forest reserve, was burnt. The forest area was largely second growth and as far as is known,- no serious loss of .timber has occurred.. . ' '

A considerable volume of smoke was still in evidence this morning.
