Their Excellencies the Governor-Gen-eral and Lady Galway left Wellington yesterday morning in the Government steamer Matai for a short official visit to Picton.

The Hon H. G. R. Mason, AttorneyGeneral, will return to Wellington from Auckland today.

Senior-Sergeant G. A. Doggett and Mrs Doggett have returned to Masterton after a holiday spent motoring in the North.

The appointment of the present assistant Superintendent of Reserves in Dunedin, Mr M. R. Skipworth, to the position of Superintendent on April 1, 1940, when the Superintendent, Mr D. Tannock, will retire was approved at a meeting of the Dunedin City Council last night.

Mr Wm. Ellis, who was killed last Wednesday near Waverley, was well known in Masterton and the surrounding districts. He was employed for several years by Mr K. Butler, of Solway.

The many friends of Mr A. Latimer, stationmaster at Masterton, will be pleased to know that he is now reported to oe making satisfactory progress. He was recently admitted to the Masterton Hospital.

There died at Palmerston North last week a well-known sporting identity, in the person of Mr James (“Tim”) Troy. The deceased in his early days was a well-known athlete, and competed at many Wairarapa gatherings. He was also associated with greyhound racing and won many events in Wairarapa. In later years he was a prominent bowler.

Mr C. E. Robertson, manager of the blood and stufl stock, department of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., left Wellington yesterday to join the Aorangi, which will sail from Auckland for Vancouver today. Mr Robertson, who will have charge of the two Romney rams that have been sent to England for the Royal Centenary Show in Windsor, will visit various cities in Canada, the United States and Great Britain, carrying a number of orders for horses, cattle, thoroughbreds, sheep and pigs for New Zealand buyers. He will return via South Africa, investigating the market there for New Zealand sheep.

A unique family association with ships and the sea has been broken by the death in London on .Saturday of Captain Charles Malcolm Renaut, formerly of Christchurch, aged 69, says a Press Association telegram from Christchurch. Captain C M. Renaut first served with his father in sailing ships, later transferred to steam, and f Ol many years commanded Union Company vessels. He was appointed surveyor of ships in the Marine Department, Auckland, in 1911, and was transferred to Lyttelton in 1923, being appointed superintendent of mercantile marine there in 1929. He retired in May, 1935. Captain Renaut went to England early last- year. He and Mrs Renaut, formerly Miss Isabella Ormiston, Dunedin, intended returning to New Zealand in November next. He leaves one son, Mr J. O. Renaut London, and two daughters, Mrs R. T. Roberts, Wellington, and Mrs L. M. Aitken, Christchurch.
