TWO KILLED
BODIES FOUND ON ROADSIDE NEAR MOSGIEL HIT-AND-RUN MOTORIST SUSPECTED. i VICTIMS RIDING MOTOR-CYCLE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, April 16. A motor-cycle accident which resulted in the death of a young man and young woman and in which a hit-and-run motorist is suspected to have been implicated occurred on Duke’S Road, near Mosgiel, about midnight on Saturday. The accident was not discovered till about 8 a.m. today when the bodies of the two victims were found lying at the side of the road beside the motorcycle. The victims were:" Neil Harris, aged 24, of 136 Bay View Road. Dunedin. Vera Thomson, aged 22, employed at Wakari Hospital. When the tragedy was first discovered it was thought, that it was the result. of the motor-cyele having skidded, but further investigations revealed that .it could have been the result of a hit-and-run accident. A large body of detectives, assisted by chief traffic inspector McDowell and Inspector Sutherland, began a searching inquiry, but up to a late hour tonight no arrest had been made. It is understood that the victims of the accident were engaged to be married. CAR WRECKED DRIVER KILLED INSTANTLY. ACCIDENT NEAR TARADALE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, April 16. An accident resulting in the death of. a young man, fairly severe injuries to another and slight injuries to a third occurred oh the Taradale road, between Redcliffe bridge and Waiohiki golf links, about 1 a.m. this morning. The victims were: — Killed. Percy Stanley Donald Lowe, aged 21, son of Edmund John Lowe, Pakowhai Road, Hastings; fatal head injuries. Injured. Hector Smith. Elsthorpe; fairly severe leg injuries. Jack Thear, Hastings, slight injuries. The car, ah open roadster model, While travelling toward ‘Taradale, apparently ran off the road and hit a telephone pole. The ear was badly Wrecked, the right, side being torn almost completely off. All the occupants were precipitated on to the roadside by the' shock of the impact, Mr Lowe, who was driving the' car, being killed instantaneously. Hearing the crash, some Maoris living in Waiohiki, investigated and immediately summoned Constable J. Gartley, Taradale, who. accompanied -by:- Dr Will, Taradale, went to the scene. Messrs Thear and Smith, owner of the Car> after treatment, were admitted to the Napier Public Hospital, Mr Thear being discharged during the day. Mr Smith’s condition tonight was described as being quite fair. SECOND DEATH PEDESTRIANS KNOCKED DOWN NEAR WAVERLEY. INJURIES PROVE FATAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, April 16. The death occurred in Patea Hospital on Saturday of Mrs H. Ellis, wife of Mr M. Ellis, Waverley, as the result of injuries received when she was struck by a motor-car on Ihe main road near Waverley on Wednesday. Mrs Ellis was the second victim of the accident, her brother-in-law, Mr William Ellis dying before he was admitted to hospital.
