CARTERTON

WAIRA'RAPA HOCKEY ASSOCIATION. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Wairarapa Hockey Association was held in the P. and A. rooms, when there was a fair attendance. Although the meeting was originally called as the annual meeting, it was found that several clubs had not held their annual meetings, and had therefore appointed no delegates. It was decided to hold the annual meeting of the association at a later date. YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB. TEAMS FOR COMPETITION AND DEBATE. The Carterton Branch of the Young Farmers’ Club held a very successful meeting on Thursday night. The chairman, Mr A. Fisher, presided over an attendance of 38. • Two new members, Keith Ordish, Dalefield, and J. Williams, Ponatahi, were elected. It was resolved to efiter four teams of three each to represent Carterton in the annual contest for the Point Blank Cup. The teams are:—Jerseys: H. McKenzie, M. Knutson, W. Campin. Southdowns: S. Fisher, M. and I. Thompson. Romney Marsh: A. Fisher, D. Ross, M. Rose. Clydesdales: L. Renall, G. Wadham, J. Milne. The contest will take place on the Training Farm, East Taratahi, on Wednesday, April 26. At the next meeting of the Club two debates will be held, for which four teams have been entered. The teams are:—“A,”M. Knutson, C. Bliss, A. Deller. “B,” B. Brasell, T. McKenzie, D. Ross. “C,” S. Fisher, M. Thompson, C. Rayner, “D,” L. Renall, F. Ward, F. Orr. Teams “A” and “B” will debate on the question “That the Increased Mechanisation of the Farm is in the Best Interests of the Country.” Teams “C” and “D” will deal with the subject “That Speed is the Master of Man.” The district secretary, Mr N. Lamont, was in attendance and gave a very interesting and instructive “talkie” picture lecture on the reproduction of aninials. He was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. It was decided to hold a dance at the Parfcvale Hall on May 8 and that the Combined Ball of the Women’s Division and the Young Farmers’ Club be held in the King’s Theatre, Carterton, on Monday, May/29. Calf Club Affairs. Owing to a misunderstanding, the meeting called for yesterday afternoon lapsed for the want of a quorum. The meeting was to have been held to consider any matters of interest to the Carterton group that was worthy 'of discussion at the annual meeting of the various groups to be held at Greytown on Monday evening. A further meeting will be called of the Carterton group . after the annual meeting is held. Manawatu Trots. A large number of trotting enthusiast left this morning to attend the Manawatu, Trotting Club’s annual meeting at Palmerston North today. Result of Dry Weather. The master of Carter Home, Carterton, in conversation with the Carterton representative of the “Time-Age” said the present dry season was the first time that the Home was unable to provide its own vegetables and as a result, a heavy burden is being placed upon the institution in having to purchase its supply of vegetables. The Home during his long connection witE it had always had plenty of vegetables and some to spare. The usual quota had been sown and planted but the long spell of hot, dry weather combined with a shortage of water had made it impossible to keep the supply going. This result will be all the more felt as the winter weather approaches. Clareville Card Party. The Clareville Hall was comfortably filled last evening when the usual card tourney and dance was held. The card prizes were won as follows: —Ladies, Mrs Miller 1, Mrs E. W. Allen 2. Men, Mr Clough 1, Mr E. W. Allen 2. The consolation prizes went to Mrs Spademan and Mrs C. Holland. The Monte Carol waltz was won by Mrs T. Olliver and Mr G. Ireland. The music was supplied by Mr J. Edwards and the M.’sC. were Messrs S. Fisher and E. James. Hockey (Club’s Loss. The Carterton Hockey Club has suffered severe loss by the removal of prominent players to other districts. The Rev R. A. Byers has accepted an appointment at Christchurch, and will leave shortly; Messrs W. Sewell and R. Crawley have joined the permanent military forces and are stationed at Trentham; Mr I. Fisher has been transferred to the Mangaweka Post Office; and Mr D. Jackson, who is employed at Lower Hutt, and who may join the Karori Hockey Club. Personal. Mrs J. Ewington, Carterton, is visiting Auckland for the Till —Udy wedding. Their little son is staying with Mrs A. Ewington, Masterton.
