“THEY’RE OFF MR CUTTS!”

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Backers of that much-spoken-of and well-sired Australian horse, “Social Security,” which ran. so well in the Parliamentary Handicap last October, got a tremendous setback at seeing its jockey (in the more recent Autumn Stakes) disqualified for a meeting or two, for tossing away his cap, jacket boots and spurs during the progress of the race, and weighing-in at least half a stone lighter than when he weighedout.

Only for the universal popularity of the jockey, among owners generally, and the racing public in particular, the stewards would undoubtedly have imposed a more heavy penalty than they did. Their caution “not to repeat the Act” in the Winter Welter next June, is considered sufficiently salutary, however, for “Social Security’s” otherwise more tractable mount, who (according to the best sporting pressmen) was naturally a “bit Savage” at seeing the English-sired horse, “8.M.A.,” catching up on “Social Security” as he approached the winning post; not to'mention the “kick in the slats” that dark horse had given the popular favourite when parading in the bird-cage, before the start of the race. Those of “Social Security’s” thousands of backers, all over New Zealand, and in Australia (and elsewhere) will doubtless “double” their bets for a “recovery” in the Winter Welter (next June) when the fast horse “Caution” (from Holland ridden by Hamilton, is expected to be the only other worth backing proposition in a weight-for-age field. —I am, etc., “PETER THE PUNTER.” Masterton, April 13. t
