FROZEN MEAT TRADE
LONDON QUOTATIONS LAMB MARKET DEPRESSED. CHILLED BEEF WEAKER. ' Lamb market: Prime lamb, 2’s and B’s, shade easier, others unchanged. Consumption satisfactory for the time of year, but heavy spot stocks depressing market. Mutton market: Wethers trade slow with lower prices; ewes, steady with fair trade. Beef market: Frozen beef, neglected owing to low prices chilled; chilled beef, weaker, owing to heavy supplies and slow demand. New Zealand porker pigs: Easier on the slow trade, due to warmer weather. New Zealand baeoner pigs: Weaker, owing to lower prices of Continental bacon. Boneless bobby veal: Market quiet and unchanged. The above report was received yesterday by the Meat Board, which advises that the following are the ruling prices of wholesale quantities oi the descriptions of frozen meat mentioned and are for representative parcels of the goods sold on Thursday. Chilled beef prices are averages of the week. All prices are on the basis of delivered to Smithfield market. Prices for the previous week are shown in parentheses:— New Zealand Sheep: Crossbred wethers and/or maiden ewes, 481 b. and under, 4 ; ?d (4 7-8 d); 491 b. to 561 b., 4c (4d); 571 b. to 641 b., 3 5-8 d (33d); 651 b to 721 b., 3 3-8 d (3Jd). Messrs Levin & Co., Ltd., have received'the following cable from their London agents, dated April 13: Frozen meat quotations (prices on a delivered basis, i.e., including storage charges, cartage, market tolls, etc): — North Island Down lambs. 28/361bs, 6 7-8 d per lb; 36/421bs, 61d per lb; best North Island xbd K lambs, 28/361bs, 6:;d; 36/421bs, 6 3-Bd. North Island 2nd quality lambs av. 30/311bs, 64d. Best North Island wether sheep under 481bs, 43d; 48/56, 4d; 56/64, 3 5-8 d; 64/72, 3 3-Bd. North Island ewes, under 481bs, 3 3-8 d; 48/56's 3d; 56/54’s 23d; 64/72’s, 24d. Compared with last week’s quotations Down lambs are 1-8 per lb lower, xbd lambs, 36/421bs, 1 -8d per lb lower; wethers under 481bs and 56/72, l-8d per lb lower. Others are unchanged. The market on the spot is weaker all round, and the outlook at the moment is unfavourable.
