WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT ALFREDTON. COMPETITION WINNERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The members of the Alfredton Women's Institute held their meeting recently. There was a good attendance of members. Visitors were also present from Kaiparoro. Mrs Hull presided. After the business had been disposed of each member read a verse of poetry. A most interesting demonstration of wreath making was given by Mrs T. Raleigh. The competitions for the month were as follows: Apple jelly, Miss S. Napier 1, Mrs Seymour 2, Mrs Hutchings 3. Best bloom, Mrs G. Napier (polyanthus rose) 1, Mrs E. McLean (African marigold) 2, Mrs Seymour (dahlia) 3. A new member was welcomed in Mrs A. Edmonds. It was decided to have a “Bring and *Buy” stall in May. A pretty posy , was presented to Mrs Raleigh made by Mrs Seymour, and a hearty vote of thanks accorded to her for her very interesting demonstration. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames George, Algie and Burch. The singing of the National Anthem brought a pleasant gathering to a close. A INSTITUTE. FORMED AT TE ORE ORE. On Thursday afternoon a meeting of the women of Te Ore Ore was held in the local school when arrangements were made to establish in the district a Women’s Institute. Mrs F. Joblin, of Gladstone, president of the Wairarapa Federation Of Women’s institutes, presided over the meeting which was well representative of the district, although apologies for absence were received from several interested ladies. It was decided to name the new Institute Te Ore Ore. The election of officers fSr the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mrs A. Fotihy; vice-presidents, Mrs McDonald and Mrs Jack Haeata; secretary and treasurer, Miss E. M. Bliss; committee, Mrs J. Karaitiana, Mrs Anaru, Mrs Nini (with power to add). The meetings are to be held at the Te Ore Ore School on the second Tuesday of every month at 7.30 o’clock in the evening. The delegates to attend the annual meeting of the Wairarapa Federation oh Wednesday, April 19i at Masterton, are Mrs McDonald and Mrs Albert. A most interesting and informative address was given by Mrs Joblin, who explained the aims and aspirations of the Institute movement. Arrangements were made to hold the first meeting of the new Institute on May 2;

At the conclusion of the meeting, on the motion of Mrs Fouhy, a hearty vote of thanks was tendered to Mrs Joblin. MEETING AT OPAKI. COMPETITION WINNERS. The monthly meeting of the Opaki Women’s Institute was held on Thursday April 6. Miss Rollo being unable to act as president, Miss Wingate was elected with Mrs Buick and Mrs A. Beetham as vice-presidents. A most interesting talk was given by Mr C. Bannister on “Old Landmarks and Activities in Masterton.” He was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. Points prizes for the year were presented to Mrs Harris, 1; Mrs Rayner, 2, and Mrs Wingate and Miss Rollo (equal) 3. # The prize for the most attractive motto judged by popular vote went to Miss O. lorns. The monthly competition for a child’s knitted garment resulted as follows: Mrs Buick, 1; Mrs Weston, 2; Miss Rollo, 3. Miss Robinson and Miss lorns were appointed delegates to the first annual council meeting of the Wairarapa Federation to be held in the Masonic Hall, Masterton, on Wednesday, April 19. Members are asked to attend in good numbers. Morning tea will be served at 10.30 a.m. and the business will begin at 11 a.m.
