DALADIER'S INTIMATION
DETERMINATION TO OPPOSE AGGRESSION Measures Taken Against Surprises at Frontiers GUARANTEES AND COLLABORATION (Received This Day 10 a.m.) PARIS, April 13. The Premier, M. Edouard Daladier, has issued the following declaration: “We have taken action to strengthen our defences and our ties of solidarity with those determined to oppose aggression. Since my speech, we have done this without verbal demonstrations or vain provocation. Our action may be the more effective as it has no need to be accompanied either by speeches or threats. We have taken military measures as a guarantee against surprises at the frontiers of France and the Empire.” M. Daladier gave Greece and Rumania guarantees similar to those given by Mr Neville Chamberlain, declaring that the object was to organise a necessary collaboration of all nations not wishing to threaten the vital interests of any people who would not refuse loyally to examine actual problems. He added that the close and profound agreement between Britain and France was never stronger. France and Poland guarantee each other immediately and directly against all threats affecting their vital interests.

CATHOLIC LAITY
LAST-MINUTE APPEAL FOR PEACE. COUNSEL TO BOTH SIDES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day. 11.0 a.m.) LONDON. April 13. The "Herald" publishes an appeal to the Roman Catholic laity throughout the world urging bishops to approach governments for a last-minute peace conference. The appeal is being sent to the Pope and to editors of Catholic
journals all over the world, also to prominent persons of all faiths. This is the first time in history in which an attempt has been made by the laity to rouse Catholic opinion in order to enforce the church’s teaching on peace and war. The “Herald” rejects a pacifist solution, declaring that both sides must bo prepared for sacrifices in order to end the impasse, but that if one side will not listen to reason there will be adequate moral grounds for resistance against an attempt to dominate the world by force.
