BOLD STEP A DUAL WINNER

(By “The Cynic.”)

Boldstep who won both clays at. Tauherenikau is a well-bred four-year-old gelding by Hunting Song from the Martian—Stepdancer mare Warstep, a winner of the New Zealand and Auckland Cups, hence he is a half-brother to Footfall, another good performer, and to Vanestep, who ran a second in the New Zealand Cup. Most of his wins to date have been over sprint courses, but he has the lines to go a middle distance, and his breeder-own-er, Mr G. D. Jobson, of Gisborne, will probably turn him to such racing in the future. Opaki Trained. Saki, who scored twice at Tauherenikau, has been racing only this season, and these were his fifth wins. An Australian-bred three-year-old gelding by the Lemberg horse Eastern Monarch out of a near relative to the Melbourne Cup winner King Ingoda and the Auckland Cup winner Corinax, he is owned by Mr J. Jameson, of Masterton. who bought him as a yearling in Australian for 130 guineas. From Gisborne. Reay Bridge, a winner on Saturday at Tauherenikau, who did his first racing last season under the name of Fitzjames, was in winning form a couple of months ago on the Gisborne circuit, where Boldstep was also successful. A four-year-old chestnut gelding, he is a son of the Colossus horse Master Colossus and an East Coast mare named Likely, who was by Signalman out of the Strowan mare Ladylike, a winner of upwards of a score of races about 30 years ago. The ability of Ladylike still persists in her grandson, who showed promise when first raced last season. Happy Heels. When Happy Heels won a maiden race at Masterton early last season he looked like developing good form, but shortly afterwards he had an accident on the training track and as he raced poorly subsequently he was turned out for a spell of over nine months. Now four years old, he is a light bay gelding by Lackham from that rueful All Black mare Cleasanta, a winner of the Marton and Woodville Cups, and he is thus a full-brother to the well-performed Clessamor. He carries the colours of Mr J. A. Robertson, of Wellington, who bought him for 200 guineas as a yearling, and he is a member of H. B. Lorigan’s team. Out of Hacks. Monday’s win was Deficit’s second recent success, and he will have to do his future racing in open ranks. His victory was unusual, as it completed a treble for his dam, the Paper Money mare Passbook, during the day, Beawlivre having won at Riccarton and Dissipation also at Tauherenikau. These three horses are Passbook’s only contribution as yet to the ranks of racing gallopers. Second Success. Ruling Star, a four-year-old son of Chief Ruler and the Limond—- Cowl mare Phrosa, dam also of Hilary, was, enjoying his second success. Prior to this season he had raced only twice. He is not an impressive track horse, but he goes well in his races, particularly showing the possession of staying ability. He is owned by his breeder, Mr G. F. Moore, of Kai Iwi, being a member of T. R. George’s team. Well Bred. Counter was enjoying his second success in a short career on Saturday, and he was unlucky not to have won at one of his other outings. A chestnut gelding owned by his breeder, Mr J. H. Payton, of Masterton, he is the first of the Croupiers to race and he is an excellent advertisement for his sire. His dam is the Thurnham—Nantville mare Thurville, Nantville being a daughter of Nantes, the grandam.of Nightmarch and Silver Ring, so that he is capitally bred on his maternal side. Cheap Buy. Heroic Maid recouped her connections for undertaking the long trip down from Matamata on Monday. She is an Australian-bred Marconigram filly who cost her owner Mr F. H. Livingstone, 100 guineas at the Sydney Sales last Easter, and as this was her third success to date she has already become a cheap buy at the price. RACING FIXTURES April 15 —Stratford.
