TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

MEETING IN MASTERTON. j ADDRESS EY MRS BARKER. The Masterton Townswomen’s Guild held its first monthly meeting for the Guild's fourth year yesterday afternoon in the Y.M.C.A. Hall. Mrs W. H. Judd presided and although it was still the holiday period, there was a splendid attendance of members. Mrs Judd welcomed the newly appointed officers, and wished the members a happy year. The programme for the year 1939-40 was submitted to the meeting and was met with unanimous approval. The Roll Call, "The first dress I remember wearing,” brought forth many amusing descriptions and by-gone memories. The singing circle rendered two items after which afternoon tea was served. Mrs Barrer in an interesting address spoke on “The Pan-Pacific Movement." She explained the objects of the fifth Pan-Pacific Conference in 1940, which will be the first to be held in Npw Zealand. At it would be gathered some of the most able women speakers in the world. The object was to gather women of the Pacific countries together to enable them to know and understand the history, culture, and political problems of other countries. Mrs Barrer told of some of the interesting and clever women of other countries —India, Japan, China and the Philippine Islands —whom she had met at a former conference. At the conference was to be held something unique—a United Divine Service of women at which all religions of the world will be represented. The speaker urged the study of some of the big problems of the day which will be discussed at the conference. Mrs Barrer was sincerely thanked for her instructive address. The meeting was brought to a close by the singing of the "Ode.”
