ESPERANTO

MASTERTON CLUB MEETING. The (weekly meeting of the Masterton Esperanto Club was held last evening in the Club Room,.Municipal Buildings, Mr A. Dewar, D.8.E.A., presiding over a good attendance. Correspondence in Esperanto received during the week comprised two letters from England—one from “The New Commonwealth” (a society founded for the promotion of international law and order through the creation of a tribunal in equity and an international police force) and another, from the Pacifist Esperanto League, both organisations having adopted Esperanto for the purpose of fostering their aims. . In a short address .to members, the secretary (Mr W. H. King) stated that subsequent to the issue of a decree on October 11 last'by the French Minister of Education authorising the voluntary introduction of Esperanto into French educational institutions, Esperanto had been introduced into over 40 secondary schools and 9 universities throughout France. During the winter just concluded in Britain more than 20 London schools had conducted Esperanto courses. New books in Esperanto are appearing at the average rate of one per day. In this field, English publications of note recently translated into Esperanto include “Murder in the Orient Express,” a “thriller” by Agathe Christie; “The Prince and Betty" (P. G. Wodehouse); “The Time Machine” (H. G. Wells); and “The Princess from Mars” (Edgar Rico Burroughs). In addition, notable literary works in several languages have also been translated and published in the international tongue. ’ The usual weekly tuition, which followed, embraced further study of grammar by the elementary students and conversational practice and advanced grammar by the senior members.

An interesting programme concluded with a resume, in Esperanto of the contents of the latest edition of the New Zealand all-Esperanto journal, "La Interna Ideo." this item being contributed by Mr King.
