NEW INDUSTRY
FACTORY TO BE OPENED IN MASTERTON. PLANS TO PROMOTE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT. Advice has been received by the “Times-Age” that the principal of the factory which recently advertised for staff will be visiting Masterton. probably this' week, to make preliminary arrangements for commencing production here. At the moment no information is available as to the nature of the industry, but sufficient applications were received from the advertisement inserted in the “Times-Age” to make it possible to select a suitable staff. Full details of the project will shortly, be made public. Considerable interest is still being aroused locally regarding the possibilities of attracting certain industries to this district and tentative plans are being made for an effort to publicise the attractions of the Wairarapa from an industrial point of view. Such a step is being taken also in other towns and of the main centres. Christchurch is making a big bid for pressing its claims as an industrial centre. The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce has a special industrial expan sion committee and recent information from Christchurch gives details of a conference of all local bodies and industrial associations to be held on May 3. The chairman of that committee of the Chamber of Commerce, Mr H. C. Hassall, has claimed for Christchurch such advantages as cheap land, easy factory lay-out. plentiful and cheap supplies of electric power and water, building costs 10 per cent lower than in the main North Island centres, low rents and a host of other similar advantages. His Chamber has taken the lead in calling the conference referred to and it is probable that booklets descriptive of the industrial advantages of - Christchurch will be issued through th-.' various agencies coming into contact with industrialists. The plans at present being considered for publicising the advantages of the Wairarapa as an industrial area, also include such publicity and information gathered in Wellington from such a reliable source of authority as the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation indicate that a well-organised publicity effort on the part of this district woold be well worth while. The St. Bride’s Convent annual garden party and sale of work will be held in the beautiful grounds of the Convent on Saturday next. The stalls will comprise work and fancy, sweets, cakes, produce, and afternoon tea will be procurable. A baby show will be held at 3 p.m.
