There are four British battleships, one aircraft carrier, six cruisers and several flotillas of destroyers and submarines, as well as numerous auxiliary' vessels, at present scattered between Gibraltar and Malta, in addition to other units based at Gibraltar, Malta and Alexandria. France is taking precautions in the Mediterranean, her action coinciding with the British measures. It is believed that France is reinforcing her Syria and North Africa garrisons. British naval officers were recalled from weekend leave to Gibraltar. Anti-aircraft coastal defences at Malta were manned, this being officially described as a precautionary measure.
