COMMENT ON RACING FIRST TO FLORAL ROBE. Floral Robe was prominent early in the Maiden Plate but she drifted badly after going a couple of furlongs and rounding the turn. Po Atarau and Wakarara were showing the way from Telemon, Pharisee and Beagle. There was little change into the straight where Floral Robe hit the front and stayed there to win by three-quarters of a length from Dissipation, who was al-

ways well placed. Telemon finished on well to collect third money a neck away. Phil was well in the picture at the business end but the judge apparently missed his colours. MISTER QUEX ALL THE WAY. Mister Quex scored an end-to-end victory in the Mokai Handicap. He was first out and was trailed most" of the journey by Export and the first favourite Gay Chou. Matoru took a hand when the straight was reached but Mister Quex finished on the bit to score by a length from Export, with the fast finishing Gay Chou a head away third. Gay Chou and Export both appeared to leave their effort too late, and when the whips carne-out they had no chance with the winner. HAPPY HEELS SCORES. Always well placed Happy Heels came through in the straight to score a convincing win in the Tuhitarata Handicap. Passing the mile post Ruling Star had charge from Happy Heels, Etzel and Dancing Flame, but when the home turn was reached Dancing Flame was out in front from Southern Blood and Etzel. In a punishing finish Happy Heels held on to win by a clear length from first favourite Ruling Star. Dancing Flame faded out and finished third another length away. Then came Southern Blood. TREBOR SUCCEEDS. Galteemore endeavoured to win the Easter Handicap all the way, but found his task from the home turn too much. He was followed in the running by Yours Truly, with Meamea and Trebor next. As they ran for the home straight Yours Truly was up alongside Galteemore, and Trebor had also moved up outside Yours Truly. These three had a great set-to in the run to the post for Trebor to win well by a-length. Siegmund finished better than the other two for second. Yours Truly was third, Galteemore fourth, followed by Meamea and Lady Montana. Galteemore did not have things all his own way out in front as Yours Truly was worrying him for the greater part of the trip. Siegmund stood the leaders up several lengths as they raced for the home turn and he did well to get second. Yours Truly was cramped for room in the straight with a horse on either side of him, and he did well in the circumstances. Trebor has improved considerably in recent weeks and his win in this event gives indication that he will have further success in open company. COUNTER WINS WELL.

Showing great speed out of the barrier, Heroic Maid soon opened out a big gap after the start of the Wairarapa Nursery. Loyal Queen and Counter were her nearest attendants on the turn, but once into the straight Counter, running truly, joined ' with the leader, while Loyal Queen lost ground by going off the track. Counter soon had Heroic Maid silenced and went on to win very easily by four lengths, from Loyal Queen, while Gothic came from absolute last to take the minor money from Heroic Maid. SAKI SCORES. With a well sustained run from the straight entrance home Saki won the Kahautara Handicap quite decisively by three parts of a length. Mimicry and Dorak led early from Saki, Golden F lame and Mother-in-law, while Jeanne, who was squeezed back early, was setting the field a good start. There was little or no alteration running round the bend, but once straightened up Dorak retired and Saki went up and joined Mimicry. The pair battled it out all the way home, but Saki always held the upper hand. White Lady finished well and was third just over two lengths further back and she was followed by Golden Flame, Mother-in-law and Dorak. FAVOURITE FAILS. Tactics adopted when winning earlier in the day did not succeed with Mister Quex in the Martinborough Handicap. After the field had settled down he was rushed to the lead but though he had a good break for a couple of furlongs he was joined at the half-mile by Silver River. Three furlongs from home he retired and Good Sun ran up to Silver River and this pair led into and well down the straight. Just as Good Sun had assumed charge a challenge came from Boldstep, who went on to win by half a length. Good Sun was three parts of a length ahead of Silver River, with Mister Quex, Liane and Cricket the next to finish. GOOD PERFORMANCE. It was a good performance on the part of Reay Bridge to win the concluding event. Titter was soon in charge and led to the straight entrance, where every horse with the exception of Reay Bridge appeared to have a chance. At this juncture Titter, Rarotonga, Larwood and Hinerawa on the inner were bunched, with the rest close up. Titter had had enough a furlong from the post and it looked like Rarotonga and Larwood fighting out the finish when Reay Bridge came from the clouds to win going away by half a length from Rarotonga, with Larwood in third place and Titter fourth. Titter might have done better had she not been allowed to run along in front.

CARNIVAL AT RANDWICK DEFAULTER’S DAZZLING WIN. NEW ZEALAND HORSES DO WELL. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. SYDNEY, April 8. The weather for the opening day of the A.J.C. autumn carnival at Randwick was delightful. The course was soft and heavily grassed. The attendance was 62,000. A feature of the day was Defaulter’s dazzling but narrow victory in the Autumn Plate. Defaulter, who was a hot public fancy, stripped like a champion. He was headed by the veteran Allunga approaching the home turn, and looked beaten at the Leger, where he responded to the whip and, despite being squeezed on the rails by Allunga, got his head in front and in a desperate finish gained the verdict on the post, j the crowd breaking into sustained cheering. The stewards opened an inquiry into Defaulter’s interference with Spear Chief during the running and adjourned it. Later they found there was interference by Allunga with Defaulter toward the finish and reprimanded Munro. They expressed the opinion that Defaulter had not interfered with Spear Chief, who accidentally struck the rails. High Caste was beaten on his merits in the Sires’ Produce Stakes by the good Marconigram colt Reading. The Doncaster Handicap was won in good style by Gold Rod, who was always handy, but The Trump and Mildura, who were the popular picks, failed lamentably. New Zealand-bred horses in Defaulter, Gold Rod and Mosaic won the three main races. Mosaic incurs a 71b. penalty for the Sydney Cup. bringing his weight to 8.2.
