PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT. SPLENDID PLAY BY HORNABROOK. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Setting an official amateur record for the Hutt course with superb golf in the afternoon round. J. P. Hornabrook. a former New Zealand champion. easily topped the field of 16 who qualified for the Wellington provincial amateur golf championship on the Hutt links on Saturday. Hornabrook equalled the scratch score for the course with his morning round of 74, but gave the impression that once he found touch with his putter he would be capable of reeling off low figures. These indications materialised in the afternoon. Even then the breaks went against him on several greens. Going out he chopped two strokes off bogey, and would have bettered these figures had many putts not done everything but go down. The home journey, however, was a real par-shattering performance by Hornabrook. Sinking a fair-sized putt for a birdie three at the 12th he fcund the touch that had eluded him earlier and proceeded to reel off birdies and bogeys with confidence and ease to finish five under par for the last nine and seven under for the 18 holes. His rounds were: Hornabrook (out) .... 443444444 —35 Scratch score .... ■.... 453444544 —37 Hornabrook (in) 433444244 —32 Scratch score 434545354 —37 Only once in the afternoon round was Hornabrook off the line when he pushed his second out to the left at the 15th (505yds), but he recovered magnificently, after chipping to the green with a glorious 30 foot putt which sailed unerringly into the cup. Driving long and straight and laying his seconds with almost unfailing regularity on the greens, Hornabrook was continually putting for 3s’. It was inspiring golf from one of the finest players the Dominion has produced. Seven birdies and 11 bogeys made up his score over the second 18 holes. With the exception of Hornabrook, the field was not particularly strong, many of the province’s leading amateurs having preferred the North Island championship on the Manawatu club’s links. Conditions were ideal overhead. The long spell of dry weather had left the course very hard. There was plenty of run on the fairways, but some of the greens were tricky. The following qualified for the match play today:— J. P. Hornabrook (Masterton) 74-67-141 H. A. Black (Miramar) .... 76-72-14'8 F. A. Kembler (Paekakariki) 73-75-148 J. B. Crawford (Waiwetu) 75-79-154 J. S. Park (Hutt) 76-80-156 J. B. Tunnell (Rangimai're) 78-81-159 F. W. Huggins (Nelson) .... 83-79-162 F. W. Page (Manor Park) .... 84-78-162 G. Tustin (Hutt) 81-81-162 H. L. Perry (Featherston) .. 82-82-164 H. E. H. Aplin (Miramar) .... 81-83-164 D J. Oliver (Waiwetu) 81-83-164 H. H. McElliott (Hutt) 80-84-164 E. S. Thomson (Hutt) 80-86-166 J. Shelly (Miramar) 82-85-167 L. Quinn (Waiwetu) 81-86-167 The Birnie Cup, for the best stake round on handicap over 36 holes, was won by F. C. Pears, Hptt, handicap 24, with net scores of 73 and 65 —138. The morning medal round was won by D. L. Irwin, Hutt, 79-11-68, and the afternoon medal by F. C. Pears, 89-24-65.
