WAIRARAPA v. LEAGUE. SOME SPARKLING PLAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Some sparkling cricket was witnessed in the two-day representative match between the Wellington Mercantile League and Wairarapa which commenced at Kelburn Park on Saturday. Batting first, Mercantile League compiled 254. Features of the innings were' the bright partnership between E. R. Jeffrey and C. Williams, whose running between the wickets showed admirable judgment, an impressive knock by J. C. Dow, and useful contributions by E. Pickering and W. Moore. Jeffrey’s 70 was a carefree display and included 13 fours. Dow played more correct cricket, meeting the ball with the full face of the bat and showing a resolute defence. He hit 11 fours. Hoar was the most impressive of the visitors’ bowlers. A young player, he worked up plenty of speed and looks like developing into a very serviceable fast trundler. Wairarapa opened its innings badly. Jeffrey getting three wickets cheaply. A solid knock by Stubbings averted a collapse, and an aggressive knock by Newman Hoar, boosted the total at a critical stage. Sandholm bowled very steadily to take four wickets. Play will be resumed at 10 o’clock this morning. Scores: — MERCANTILE LEAGUE. First Innings. E. Pickering, c and b Greer 26 R. Kemp, o Hoar 9 F. Holz, b Pool 11 W. Jupp, b Greer 0 E. R.
