Founded in June, 1918, the Canterbury Justices of the Peace Association was the first such organisation to be formed in the Dominion. Following this lead, associations were established in many parts of New Zealand and the movement was so successful that it was found necessary to form the New Zealand Federation of Justices’ Association. The Canterbury association has 76 members with at least 20 years’ service as Justices of the Peace, the senior member (Mr Thomas Taylor) having served for more than 50 years. Mr Taylor was appointed in 1881. Other ■ ustices appointed before 1900 were Messrs C. I. Jennings, of Rangiora (1891): W. H. Rose (1892). Colonel G. J. Smith. Messrs A. M. Owen and James Davidson (1899). According to the report the membership of the association is 257. Plans for the celebration of the twenty-first anniversary in June are mentioned in the report.
