“WHILE SHAVING.”

(The Editor.) Sir, —I am glad my effort of last Monday stirred up a little interest in local affairs, even if it was only "Balaclava’s” recruiting appeal or “Bettwyscoed’s” interesting information about her great-grandmother’s garments! I notice two letters were published on the argument for or against tepid swimming baths in Masterton. Well, it is interesting to hear two sides of an argument. Personally, I prefer my own shower, as I am not much of a swimmer. but 1 am inclined to agree with “Ratepayer” to this extent —that the Borough Council should go more fully into the matter before they take action; find out if tepid baths have been a success in Wellington or any other towns; also how much income will they derive from them during the winter months. Another subject often comes to my mind when facing the shaving mirror. What about the Rimutaka tunnel, and why do some of our worthy citizens get so hot under the collar about it? I have an open mind on the subject, but I would dearly like some of these questions answered: Assuming the tunnel will cost a million pounds (probably a lot more —I don’t know), and with interest at 31 per cent we have £35,000 per annum. Is the Wairarapa district going to benefit by that amount financially every year? If so, whose pocket is it going into? Are the beneficiaries prepared to pay the Railway Department £35.000 extra for benefits conferred? If not, it seems to me our tunnel advocates arc expecting the taxpayers of New Zealand to pay them for their pet scheme. Of course. I may be all wrong; I am only asking for information. and hope these few queries will elicit the same. I have bean using the same safety

razor since 1911. I guess that is the oldest in Masterton. Now, then —who has the oldest shaving brush still in use? Congratulations to the gentleman who wrote about the bicycles in Queen Street. It certainly is disgraceful how they are allowed to sprawl over the pavement. There will be a serious accident one day unless this nuisance is stopped. What’s wrong with having a few bicycle stands such as are to be seen at Palmerston North? In spite of “Balaclava’s” request, may I still remain “ANON.” Masterton, April 10.
