Large Quinnat Salmon.

A quinnat salmon of extraordinary size, possibly a record for New Zealand rivers, has been brought to the Canterbury Museum for mounting. Caught in the Rakaia river by Mr W. Cromie, it weighed approximately 531 b. It is a male fish, 41 inches long and 11 inches deep. Salmon of approximately equal weight have been caught before, but these are exceptional. Mr A. E. HefTord, Chief Inspector of Fisheries, states in an article in this year’s “New Zealand Year-Book,” that several quinnat salmon of more than 401 b have been caught with rod and line, and one weighing 521 b. Otago Meat Killings. Whereas an abnormal season, with droughts in various parts of the Dominion, has caused farmers to send to the freezing works in the north larger numbers of, sheep and lambs much earlier than usual. Otago is experiencing a fairly normal year, with the result that killings are much later than in northern districts. It is predicted that killings in the province will show a decrease this season on account of the present shortage of feed and smaller lambing percentages recorded in the summer just past. Certainly there is little likelihood of there being any congestion in the south as is being experienced in the more northern districts.
