CROWN OF THORNS

HOLY RELIC GOES ON TOUR. For the first time in seven hundred years the Crown of Thorns, most precious relic of the treasure of Notre Dame, will leave Paris. His Eminence Cardinal Verdier himself will carry the holy relic from Paris to Sens and Villeneuve, after stops at Melun, Fontainebleau and Montereau. The pilgrimage will form part of the ceremonies to be held in France this vear to commemorate the arrival of the Crown of Thorns in that country. It was in 1239 that the relic, presented by Jean de Brienne, King of Jerusalem, to Saint Louis, King of France under the title of Louis IX, was taken to France. Louis IX received the present at Villeneuve, but deposited it in the Sainte Chapelle, Paris. The commemorative ceremonies will be held in July, and details are being organised by the Archbishop of Sens with the assistance of Canon Rouch, Dean of Villeneuve I’Archeveque. After several days, when the relic will be exposed at the towns visited, the Crown of Thorns will be returned to the treasure of Notre Dame.
