The North Island golf championships opened today on the Manawatu Club’s links in perfect weather. The fairways are very dry but the greens are perfect. Results are: — First round: I. A. Ewen (Hutt) beat C. B. Thomas (Feilding) 2/1; A. R. Kitto (Wanganui) beat F. C. Fryer (Napier) 5/4; J. P. Mortland (Taihape) beat D. Harkness (Palmerston North) 1 up: O. H. Williams (Manawatu) beat G. T. Rapley (Hutt) 2/1; B. M. Silk (Wanganui) beat E. R. Chapman (Manawatu) 2/1; P. G. F. Smith (Akarana) beat A. W. Chapman (Palmerston North) 5/3; R. F. Kitto (Wanganui) beat W. J. Goodwin (Manawatu) 6/5; W. G. Horne (Hutt) beat J. L. Tucker (Palmerston North).
