Mr and Mrs H. M. Major left Masterton today by motor-car, on a visit to Auckland.
Mr and Mrs I. I. McGregor, of Masterton, left today on a trip to the South Island.
Mr R. W. McVilly, formerly general manager of the New Zealand railways, was a visitor to Masterton yesterday. Mr A. J. Curtis was re-elected president jof the Wellington Employers’ Association at the annual meeting last night.
Mr A. W. Scott, of the Lands and Survey Department, Hamilton, and formerly of Masterton, is spending the Easter holidays here.
Mr Maurice Fanthorpe, of Masterton, whose marriage to Miss Janet Ross will take place at Inglewood on Saturday was the recipient of a presentation from the staff of the A.M.P. Society recently.
Mr H. E. Moston, Assistant-Secretary of Labour, has been appointed Secretary of Labour. He succeeds Mr J. S. Hunter (formerly of Masterton) whose appointment as a Director of the Social Security Department was announced some time ago. Mr and Mrs J. Hayden entertained the members of the Interhouse Club staff team and their friends at a dance on Saturday night last. An interesting competition having reference to the names of every girl in the various teams which competed at the sports provided much enjoyment. The host and hostess entertained the guests at supper at the State Kitchenette. Mr H. Dearie, Eketahuna, and Mr S. Worthington, formerly of Eketahuna and now resident at Carterton, are to leave on a trip to England on April 12 on the Rangitata from Wellington. Nir Dearie will visit relatives in southern Counties after an absence of 35 years, and Mr Worthington will revisit northern Counties after an absence of 29 years. There was a large attendance at the funeral of the late Miss Nancy Barnes, which took place at the Masterton Cemetery yesterday. Services were conducted by the Rev.' F. J. Parker and the profusion of beautiful wreaths testified to the popularity of the late Miss Barnes and to the sympathy extended to her parents and family. The pallbearers were Messrs L. Welch, I. McLachlan, H. Miller, D. Hunt, R. Wilson and F. Stains. Mr A. McLagan was re-elected national president of the New Zealand Federation of Labour at the annual conference of the federation in Wellington yesterday. He was unopposed. Mr R. Eddy was re-elected national vice-president and Mr F. Cornwell, national secretary-treasurer. There were 10 candidates for two seats on the national executive and Messrs J. Roberts (New Zealand Waterside Workers), and F. P. Wal'sh (New Zealand Seamen’s Union) were re-elected. The appointment has been made of Mr C. P. Smith, senior inspector of factories and inspector of pwards in Auckland, to the position of officer in charge of the Labour Department in Auckland. It will take effect from May 1, when -the present officer in charge, Mr W. Slaughter, vacates the position on retiring leave and superannuation. The vacancy occasioned by the promotion of Mr Smith will be filled by Mr G. Brown, now district inspector of factories in Palmerston North.
