POLISH OFFER
REPORTED READINESS TO GIVE GUARANTEES IN EVENT OF AGGRESSION. AGAINST VITAL BRITISH INTERESTS. (Independent Cable Service.) LONDON, April 4. It is understood that the Polish Foreign Minister, Colonel Beck, who arrived in London yesterday, is prepared to offer Britain a pledge of reciprocal guarantees in the event of aggression against vital British interests in western Europe. Comment in Polish newspapers emphasises the need for national unity. Newspapers feature on the front page the speech of the Nationalist Party leader, M. Kowalski, declaring that, if war comes, it will be the result of German- aggression. “If Germany takes another step eastward. she must be stopped by the sword,” he said. TALKS TO BEGIN. COLONEL BECK TO MEET LORD HALIFAX. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, April 4. On Tuesday formal conversations will begin between Colonel Beck and Lord Halifax. Colonel Beck will afterward be the guest of Lord and Lady Halifax at luncheon, and will later be received by Mr Chamberlain. In view of the discussions with Colonel Beck, the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr R. A. Butler, declined today to make a statement on the present position in Danzig in reply to a question in the House of Commons. Answering another question, he said that the British Government was prepared at all times to give sympathetic consideration to the possibility of meeting the naval, as well as the other armament requirements, of Rumania. CONVERSATIONS OPENED TWO HOUR TALK BETWEEN PARTIES. (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) LONDON, April 4.
