WELLINGTON CRICKET
KNOCK-OUT COMPETITION. WON BY KILBIRNIE. (By Telegraph—Press Association ) WELLINGTON, This Day. The 1938-39 cricket season in Wellington was officially concluded on Saturday, when the senior knock-out competition was completed, Kilbirnie emerging the winners by beating Wellington by 54 runs on the first innings. On the day’s play Kilbirnie thoroughly deserved its win over Wellington, giving a more impressive allround performance. Outstanding features were the batting of D. S. Wilson and H. F. Rice (Kilbirnie) and the bowling of E. D. Blundell (Wellington), J. Ashenden and D. S. Wilson (Kilbirnie).
Though failing to carry off any grade championship, Institute won the Wellington Cricket Association’s club championship by a comfortable margin of points from Kilbirnie. Midland was successful in three grade championships, the senior proper, second grade (tie with Institute) and the junior D grade. Kilbirnie won the senior knockout competition and the junior C grade. Onslow won the junior Bl grade and ’the third grade.
