The annual meeting of the Featherston branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the Anzac Hall on Saturday night Mr H. Lawson presiding, 45 members being present. Mr A. E. Prentice and Mr H. G. Alexander, of Masterton, were visitors representing the central committee. Apologies were received from Messrs Brass and Hunter. The meeting stood in silence as a mark of sympathy for Mr J. P. Frend in his recent bereavement. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —President, Mr H. Lawson (re-elected); hon secretary, Mr J. A. Halpin (re-elect-ed);- treasurer, Mr J. W. Fellingham (re-elected); committee, Messrs G. S. Sharp, J. H. King, C. Bargh, A. Robbins, L. Smith (all re-elected) and Mr F. S. Hayes (in place of B. J. Lobb, resigned); branch delegate to central committee, Mr A. Robbins (re-elect-ed).; honorary auditor, Mr H. C. Hunter. /. i At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr A. E. Prentice gave an address on the finances of the Wairarapa R.S.A. and its activities both past and present. Particularly interesting was his reference to the steady growth in numerical strength of the R.S.A., not only in the Wairarapa district, but in the whole of New Zealand over the last few years.
A sing-song followed by supper occupied the remainder of the meeting. The R.S.A. Band, under the able conductorship of Mr J. H. Buck, gave some very original renderings of old-time songs. Although this was the band’s first appearance in public, they , gave a very creditable performance. An indication of their keeness may be gauged from the fact that five of the bandsmen retained their instruments in order to continue practice at home. Mr C. H. Rea was in charge of the vocalists, and under his leadership the band was well supported. 1
