BOWLING MATCH.

CARTERTON BEATS UPPER HUTT.

(“Times-Age” Special.)

Six rinks of Upper Hutt bowlers visited Carterton on Saturday and played a friendly game with the Carterton players. Upon arrival at the green the visitors were welcomed by the. president of the Carterton Club who said that he hoped the Upper Hutt players would enjoy their visit and go back with happy recollections of the time spent on the local green. Cheers were exchanged and play commenced. During the afternoon the visiting bowlers were entertained to afternoon tea, and at the conclusion of play the Carterton club members were thanked for their hospitality and an invitation extended to visit Upper Hutt during the next bowling season. The following is the result of games played. Carterton mentioned first in each case: —A. Thompson, Underhill, R. Thompson, Simmonds (s) beat Stewart, Hercock, Mudgway, Rendle (s), 20/19; G. Steven, Kruse, Whyte, Sorensen (s) beat Plummer, Leckie, Cropp, Gibbs (s), 28/14; Newbould, Robertson, Harris, Hughan (s) beat Weatherly, Miss Smith, Reynolds, Findlay (s), 25/18; Kilmister, Bird, Bain, Barber (s) beat Davis, Harper, Braid, Lynch (s), 31/9; W. Steven, Williams, Budd, DeLacey (s) beat Forrest, Richardson, Guthrie, Mumby (s), 26/14; Beaven, W. Hart, Barr, Stent (s) beat James, Palmer, Capewell, Dutton (s), 23/18. Carterton v. Dannevirke. Four rinks from the Carterton Bowling Club played h weekend game against Dannevirke at Dannevirke. The vistors were warmly welcomed by the president (Mr Petherick). The visitors were most hospitably entertained and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. At the conclusion of the games Mr L. J. Harris, vice-president of the Carterton Club, thanked the 1 Dannevirke Club for having provided a very pleasant day and for their hospitality. The game resulted in a win on the aggregate for the home side by 16 points. The following were the games, Carterton players being mentioned first in each instance: — Morning:—Kilmister, Hipkins, Kruse, Beale (s) beat Fairbrother, Hoffminster, Gandell, Lowe (s), 23/22; Thompson, Foster, Nicholson, R. Thompson (s) lost to Dobson, Roberts, Clark, Bibby (s), 22/24; Campbell, Matson, Bain, DeLacey (s) beat Brighton, Potts, Burkenshaw, Dyer (s), 23/13; J. Harris, W. Hart, Barber, G. Hart (s) lost to Patterson, Nicholson, Tyler, Register (s),-11/23. Afternoon: —DeLacey lost to Petherick, 22/25; Beale lost to Register, 25/30; Thompson lost to Dyer, 22/26; Barber lost to Lowe, 21/25. A rink of Woodville bowlers played for Carterton and lost and won a game in the morning and afternoon sessions respectively.

GUN CLUB COMPETITIONS.

WIND-UP OF SUCCESSFUL SEASON

At the weekend on the Clareville Racecourse the Carterton Gun Club held a very successful wind-up to the season’s activities, when 29 shooters took part in the programme. Among those shooting were some who had taken part in the New Zealand championship meeting, among them being Messrs J. Donnelly (Auckland), T. Skippage and A. V. Swanson (Lower Hutt). The success of two young shooters of the Carterton Club, Messrs Rex Walker and R. Williams in winning the big sweepstake was received with enthusiasm and they were warmly congratulated by the large number of shooters present. Messrs Walker and Williams tied in the big handicap and decided to divide the first and second money (£9), and for Mr J. J. Hadley's Cup they shot off, first miss out. Williams being the winner. Messrs Donnelly, Allen and King divided third money.

At the conclusion of the meeting Mr C. E. Grey presented the cups donated to the club by Messrs E. H. Hawker and J. J. Hadley, the former’s trophy going to Mr F. E. Allen and the latter to Mr R. Williams. Mr Grey congratulated the club upon its very successful first year’s shooting, and said that he hoped the club next year would again have a successful time. The meeting was well managed by the executive and the club’s capable secretary, Mr V. Gustofsen. The manipulation of the trap was well carried out by Mr Joe McKnight and he was complimented by the shooters for his work. Smith (16yds.), J. C. Smith (11yds.), A. Warren (11 yds.), 18 birds each; H. K. Smith (19 yds.), B. Sutherland (14yds.), B. Lepinski (11yds.), A. V. Swanson (16yds.), 17 birds each; D. McKenzie (21yds.), T. Skippage (19yds.), L. Rayner (11yds.), V. Swanson (11yds.), B. Feast, 11yds.), 16 birds each; J. McKenzie (21yds.), Jim McKenzie (19yds.), A. Teal (11 vds.), W. Moroney (11yds.), 15 birds each; R. Fuge (13yds.), 14 birds; G. A. Vincent (11yds.), 12 birds. Four shooters retired. Nine Bird Match; H. K. Smith, 9 birds, 1; Messrs G. Bretherton,. B. Feast, A. Warren, 8 birds; Jack McKenzie, C. E. Grey, Jim McKenzie, R. Buick, L. Smith, R. Fuge, J. C. Smith, G. A. Vincent, L. Rayner, 7 birds; F. Allen, B. Lipinski, 6 birds; R. A. Buick, A. V. Swanson, R. Walker, 5 birds; W. Moroney, 4 birds. Mr R. Strang’s prize of a quarter of a lamb for first year shots belonging to Carterton Club who did not get into the prize money in the first match was won by J. C. Smith, of Pahiatua. Personal. The friends of Mrs H. Cornish, of Longbush, will regret to hear that she has had to enter a private hospital in Wellington for treatment. LAWN TENNIS. CLOSING OF CARTERTON CLUB SEASON. The Carterton Tennis Club held its official closing for the season on Saturday when a combined handicap .Yankee doubles tournament was

held. The final was won by L. D. Keedwell and Miss E. Stubbs, who defeated A. D. Taylor and Miss B. Peters. The championships were won during the season as follow: Men’s senior, L. D. Keedwell; ladies’ senior, Mrs W. M, Worsford; men’s junior, _ R. Brown; ladies’ junior, Mrs R. Harrington.

The handicaps resulted: Men’s singles, J. B. Steel; ladies’ singles, Mrs M. W. Worsfold; men’s doubles, D. L. Taverner and L. D. Keedwell; ladies’ doubles, Mesdames Crawley and Taplin; combined doubles, I. Bond and Miss D. Crawley.
