BOWLING
BELL SHIELD.
RETAINED BY PARK CLUB
A large number of spectators were given a splendid exhibition of bowling on the Park green on Saturday afternoon when they witnessed a return match for the Bell Shield between the challengers—Bannister D. Thomson, Thurston, Taylor (s), representing the Masterton Club, and the holders, Osborne, Wilder, H. Thompson, Southey (s), of the Park Club. The green was very fast, which at first somewhat handicapped the visitors, the fourth head showing the score 10 to nil against them. From then, however, they had found the “feel” of the green, and the game developed into a grim fight for supremacy. The Park players appeared to have a slight advantage in drawing, but this was counteracted by Taylor’s accurate driving, the result being that burnt heads were frequent. The end of the 19th head saw the scores Park 20, Masterton 15, but Taylor annexed a four on the penultimate head which put him within reach of victory.
When the skips went down for the last time Park were lying two up “jack high” about a foot off kitty. Taylor drew the shot right on to the jack with his first bowl but his second travelled about two inches too far to score. The game thus resulted in a tie 20 all —and the Shield, therefore, remains with the Park Club. WALL CUP. WIN FOR MASTERTON. Notes by “The Bowler.” A most enjoyable and interesting challenge match was played on the Masterton Club's green between Taylor, Ferguson. Leigh and Smith (s), of the Park Club, the holders of the Wall Cup, and McKay, E. Holtham, Gleeson, and J. V. Gordon (s), of the Masterton Club, the challengers. The game was not decided until the last head was played, and the Masterton Club won on a close measure.
On the fifth head the scores were, Park 5, Masterton 5, but at the ninth head the Park had a lead of 10 points, the score board showing Park 15, Masterton 5.
Masterton had improved their position when the 12th head had been played, and had reduced the Park lead to four points.
On the 15th head, Park were leading by one point, and on the 18th head, still retained that lead.
The scores were equal on the 20th head, and in the last head, Masterton scored one point, which gave them a win. the final scores being Masterton 22, Park 21.
At the conclusion of the game, the Masterton club’s president, Mr S. V. Gooding, congratulated both teams on their excellent display of bowling, and trusted that next season many games would be played for the Wall cup. Only junior players are allowed to compete for the cup.
Handicap Singles.
The handicap singles of the Masterton Club were concluded on Saturday last, and resulted in a win for J. Russell. ;
In the semi-final, Russell (10), beat W. Reid (4).
In the final Russell (10), beat F. Mills (6), by a fairly large margin. My congratulations to you Jim, as you have played most consistent bowls during the season. Mills is also an improved player, and I congratulate him on being the runner-up. I feel sure' that both these players will give a good account of themselves next season. Easter Tourney. On Easter Monday the Masterton Club will hold a rink tourney. Entries close on Wednesday next, at 5 p.m.. and the committee will be pleased if those who intend to compete will make their entries as soon as possible.
