GOLDEN ORCHID HAS SPEED.
(By
“The Cynic.")
Golden Orchid .who brought about a big surprise at New Plymouth, has gone on the right way since then, and will command attention at her next appearance. Now that she has struck winning form she should be heard of again and her connections should experience little difficulty in placing her td further advantage., She has plenty of speed, but her latest form suggests that staying may be her forte.
Dark Eagle. After his good form at Hawera, Dark Eagle disappointed a host of admirers at Wanganui. He has freshened up, and If taken to Feilding, will have an opportunity to make amends. He scored his first win on this course as a two-year-old. Handled Quietly. Ramleh has been handled quietly since his bad attack of bleeding at the Egmont meeting, and has thrived on this treatment. He will be given work of a more exacting nature in the near future, and has only to keep sound to more than make amends for his defeat last month. Trench Fight’s Prospects. Trench Fight may be a better horse at Riccarton than on any course, as he is inclined to get upset when travelling. He won the Jockey Club Handicap with 9.1 in lmin. 40 3-ssecs., and a drop to 8.7 should give him a good chance in the Great Easter. Trench Fight also put up a good performance at the Auckland Cup meeting where he carried 9.6 into third place in the Glasgow Handicap to Respectful 7.11, and Lornacre 7.0, in lmin. 25secs., when a neck and half a length separated them. Trench Fight was also second with 8.6 to Queen of Song, 8.2, in the Midsummer Handicap won in 2ihin. 5 secs. His chance, however, depends a good deal on the mood of the moment rather than a handy-weight on his back.
The Sandwichman.
A great deal has been said about Defaulter winning the Wellington Cup with 8.11, and it draws attention to the fact that The Sandwichman, who ran second with 7.1-J, is engaged in the Great Autumn Handicap. The Sandwichman has 7.5 and meets Arctic King, who was fourth in the Wellington Cup, on 1-Jlb. worse terms. If the Trentham form is correct, The Sandwichman should again finish in front of Arctic King at Riccarton. The unplaced lot in the Wellington Cup included Wild Chase 9.2, Argentic 8.5, Queen of Song 8.0, Dictate 7.8, and Seigmund 7.7|. At Riccarton QUeen of Song goes up 111 b. and Siegmund 8J lb. Dictate is dropped 11b. and Argentic 61b. The Sandwichman ran badly in the W.R.C. Handicap (in which Wild Chase was third), but on Wellington Cup form he reads nicely treated. The Sandwidhman. has not raced since the Wellington Cup meeting. The Chokebore Lodge. .Four yearlings have arrived at Chokebore from the Stonyhurst stud. They are Wild Fox, a filly by Foxbridge from Wild Hind, dam of Wild Chase; Mauretania, a filly by Wihiiing Hit from Fast Passage, dam of Good Passage; Nightglass,. a filly by Nightmarch from Good Sight, dam of Keen Sight; and Retrogression, a filly by Magnus from Retrospect, dam of Recollection and Great Memory. Two other yearlings, Shikari, a colt by Bulandshar from Capercailzie, dam of Trumpet Blast; and Pleading, by Solicitor General from Eulalie, dam of Epic, are due to arrive shortly at Chokebore. They are the property of their breeder, Mr G. R. Macdonald.
A Good Record. Submission, Mr Currie’s sixth winner of the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes, belongs to his best-known family, being by Limond from Homage, so she is a sister to Episode, Honour, Courtesy, Prestige (dam of Peerless), and Courtcraft, and half-sister to Heritage and Homily. Mr Currie’s previous winners of the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes were Motley, Thaw, Episode, Midinette, and Burnish. It is a striking fact that all his winners, except Thaw, are fillies. The other winners by the Koatanui sires were Absurdum. The Dunce, Tukia, Lady Cavendish, Golden Hair, Legatee, and Smoke Screen. Bloodless Battles. The failure of Ajax to equal the record of 19 consecutive wins held by Desert Gold and Gloaming draws attention to the fact that a false value is placed on such records. In some cases they were really bloodless battles, as the only opposition came from horses started for the sole purpose of picking up place money and with not the. remotest chance of winning.
Another Sire for New ZealandMr F. Ormond, of Karamu, owner of Bulandshar, has bought the Frenchbred horse Lang Bian at 2,ooogns. Lang Bian was bred in France in 1932, and is by that sire of stayers, Massine, who won the Ascot Gold Cup and 11 races in France. He was head of the French sires’ list in 1936, and among his outstanding stock, in the current season is Feerie. winner of the French Oaks, and Blue Moon, who is considered the best colt in France today and one that is sure to win classic races next season. Lang Bian is closely related to Beau Pere. and like Bulandshar, through his dam, is a direct descendant of that great mare La Fleche, whose dam. Quiver, is a granddaughter of Polymelus.
