WINTER HIGHWAY

TO TAP CANADIAN RESOURCES. OTTAWA. Construction of a 400 mile winter highway connecting the railhead in northern Alberta with Great Slave Lake and Great Bear Lake to tap the resources of the North West Territories has been authorised by the Canadian Government. This new highway is to be commenced immediately and will be in use before the spring thaw. This highway, capable of handling tractors hauling as many as ten trailers at a time, will greatly facilitate the mover ment of freight into the north country and also out to the railhead. The new highway will be only for winter use, shipment by water continuing during the summer months. It is expected that by next year the pitchblend concentrates from the radium mines on the Great Bear- Lake, gold concentrates from the new goldfield at Yellowknife as well as fresh fish from the Great Slave Lake will be hauled over this new route.
