H.M.S. ARK ROYAL
FIRST AIRCRAFT CARRIER DESIGNED AS SUCH. RAPID MANOEUVRING POSSIBLE. (British Official Wireless.! RUGBY. March 30. Sir Stanley Goodall, Director of Naval Construction at the Admiralty, addressing the Institute of Naval Architects today, described H.M.S. Ark Royal as the first aircraft carrier to be wholly designed as such.
He said she had a Hying deck 800 feet in length, which had proved in practice to be very satisfactory. Her armaments consisted of sixteen 41-inch dual-purpose guns, both high and low angle, and four pom-poms. Her,speed in trials was 31 : Jknots. Special attention had been given to rapid manoeuvring'.
