GREYTOWN

FOOTBALL CLUB MEETING.

FUTURE OUTLOOK BRIGHT.

("Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Greytown Football Club was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall last night. Mr. J. F. Thompson presided over a good attendance of members. Apologies for absence were received, from Messrs. F. Dennes, A. Johnson and A. Allison. The balance sheet showed that the club commenced last season with a credit balance of £l9 7s 7d, and finished with a credit of £2O 13s 4d. In moving the adoption of the report Mr Thompson congratulated the club on its attaining its diamond jubilee, and stated that although the teams did not win any trophies they had played good clean football. The Greytown School had won the primary school championship and the future for young players looked bright. Mr. Thompson said that he thought that the reason for the failure of the club to attain the top of the ladder was due to lack of intensive training. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mr Alex. Johnson (coach) who is at present indisposed. Mr Thompson also paid a tribute to the assistance given to the club by the Press. The sum of £2/2/- was donated to the club funds by Mr Allison, and he was accorded a vote of thanks in connection therewith. It was resolved that letters of sympathy be sent to the relatives of the late Messrs. J. Maguire and Jack Workman. A resolution was passed that a letter be sent to Mr W. Gates, who has left the district and who was recently married. The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr J. F. Thompson (re-elect-ed); president, Mr. W. Tully; vicepresidents, Messrs R. Vance, R. G. Vile, F. J. Brooks, A. M.'Jury, G. Fenwick, C. Stringfellow; secretary, Mr T. Sugrue; treasurer, Mr F. Dennes; club captain, Mr R. Pickard; delegates to the Wairarapa Rugby Union, Messrs. R. Pickard, M. Parker, W. Stringfellow; management comittee, Messrs. W. Tully, Alex Johnson, S. Brice, R. Vance, H. McPhee, M. Parker,. W. Stringfellow, T. Sugrue, R. Pickard. Messrs. L. Gooding, R. Brice and B. Spooner were elected members. Subscriptions were fixed as follow: Senior, 6/6; junior, 4/6; thirds, 2/6. It was left to the Management Committee to appoint coaches and to nominate the teams.

It was decided to commence practice on April 4. , The arranging of a game against Eastbourne at Easter was left to the Management Comiriittee. It was pointed out that unless heavy rain came before Easter the game would have to be put off* as the ground was too hard to play on. ’ '■

JThe committee was authorised to have the electric light connected bn the playing ground. . 'Mr Thompson stated that a branch of the Red Cross Society had been established in Greytown and it was resolved to encourage the members to join up.

At a meeting of the Management Committee held subsequently it was decided to apply to the Wairarapa Rugby Union to play Eastbourne at Easter. It was decided to obtain prices for jerseys and shorts. Three new balls are to be procured. The annual report stated inter alia: In presenting the annual report for the 1938 season your officers do so with a feeling of regret that in this its Diamond Jubilee year, the Club occupied so low a position in all the three grades in which teams were entered. The senior team was unlucky in that a number of the , players sustained rather serious injury at various stages of the season and this had a very considerable effect on its performances. During the season the members who gained representative honours were:

Seniors, T. Hood, W. Stringfellow, M. i Braggins. Juniors, C. Workman, G. Humphrey, and to these members we ; extend our congratulations. The Dennes Rose Bowl was won by S. Brunton and W. Stringfellow, the trophy presented by Mr R. Vance for the most improved junior player by W. Bargh and the trophy presented by Mr N. Heapy for the third grade team by S. Field. After holding the Redmond Cup for a number of years the senior team was this season defeated by Gladstone by a narrow margin. To fittingly mark the Diamond Jubilee of the club celebrations extending from Friday, September 16 to Sunday, September 18 were held, the nature of the celebrations being a Jubilee ball on the Friday night, a procession of past and present players to the Recreation' Reserve on the Saturday afternoon fol-

lowed by a match against the Athletic Club which was won by that team. In the evening a social gathering was held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall which was attended by a number of old members of the Club including Mr James Maguire, the oldest member of the Club. The celebrations were brought to a very successful close on the Sunday. Since the New Year commenced we regret having to record the deaths of Mr James Maguire (a life member of the Club) and Mr Jack Workman, a former stalwart of the Club and an enthusiastic supporter. Shortly before the Jubilee celebrations Mr B. Brooks, who had been Secretary to, the Club for a considerable period, resigned his position, and our President, Mr W. Gates, after several years of good service to the Club has now left the district and his support and assistance will be greatly missed in the future. The financial position of the Club as may be seen from the statement of accounts is particularly sound, this happy state of affairs being largely brought about by the success attending the Jubilee celebrations. Golf. The Greytown links will be opened officially on Saturday afternoon when a mixed foursome will be played.
