YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUBS
MEETING OF WAIRARAPA EXECUTIVE. PROVINCIAL JUDGING EVENTS. The president, Mr W. James, occupied the chair at a meeting of the Wairarapa district committee of the Young Farmers’ Clubs, held in Masterton recently. The Tinui Club was awarded the debating shield for 1938. It was decided to hold the third annual district judging competition, along the same lines as last year, at the Wairarapa Training Farm on April 26. Teams from all the clubs in the Wairarapa will be competing. The classes will be: Romney Marsh, Southdowns, Jerseys and Clydesdales. On the following day at the Training Farm the Wellington provincial stock judging competition will be held when representatives of the following eight district committees will be competing: Southern Hawke’s Bay, Northern Hawke's Bay, Gisborne, South Taranaki, North Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu and Wairarapa. The Wairarapa team will be as follows: Jerseys, Mr. H. McKenzie (Carterton), reserve, Mr M. Knutson (Carterton); Romney Marsh, Mr J. McLaren (Martinborough), reserve, Mr J. S. Mackay (Masterton); Southdowns, Mr Gordon McLeod (Martinborough); Clydesdales, Mr G. Blatchford (Masterton), reserve, Mr K. Pryde (Mangatainoka).
The visitors will be billeted by members of the Masterton, Carterton, Greytown and Tinui clubs. They will be entertained at a dance on April 26 controlled by the Masterton Club for the district committee.
It was definitely decided to conduct a tour of Nelson and West Coast districts this year. A party of 50 representatives of the various clubs will leave about June 6 and will be away for 12 days. It was reported that considerable interest was being displayed by clubs at the prospect of a special farm bookkeeping course being introduced for young farmers. It was decided to take steps to see that the course was introduced. Mr T. A. Brown offered to donate a special trophy for a wool classing competition. It was resolved to also hold an essay competition on a subject related to the improvement of the Young Farmers' Club movement and club work generally. Mr W. F. McLaren kindly offered to donate the prize money.
