On a recent morning a traction engine chugged and sputtered steam into the chilly water of the swimmingbath at the Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln. The annual swimming sports were being held in the afternoon, and because of the lateness of the season and the uninviting appearance of the water on such a dull, cold day. the organising committee decided to find some way of warming the water. The college’s traction engine was commandeered, a steam pipe was led from the boiler to tho bath, and during the morning steam was passed through the water so that by the afternoon it was warm enough.
