The Rev. E. E. G. Wilson, vicar of Port Chalmers, has been appointed vicar of Waitara.
Mr R. Darroeh, secretary of the Wellington Navy League, is visiting the Wairarapa on league educational business.
The Hon. W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, will leave Wellington tonight for the Raglan, electorate. He will return-to Wellington on Tuesday.
Mr. Walter Charteris, youngest son of Mr J. R. Charteris, Jackson Street, Masterton, has been appointed manager of Whaterangi Station, Palliser Bay, Because of ill-health, Mr. Bernard E. Tripp, Timaru, has resigned from the New Zealand Wool Publicity Committee, on which he represented the wool-growers.
Mr J. W. Card, mayor- of Featherston, and Miss H. Card, mayoress, arrived at Wellington yesterday to attend the garden party at Government House, and left on their return today. Mr. C. H. Beach, A.M. Inst. C.E., A.M.l.Struct.E., of the staff of the Wellington City Engineer’s Department, has been notified of his appointment to the position of city engineer of Suva.
Mr W. Hutchens, Mus. Bac., Christchurch, who is well known throughout the Dominion as a musical adjudicator, has been appointed judge of the vocal and choral sections at the City of Sydney Eisteddfod in August. This will be the second occasion on which Mr Hutchens has judged at the Eisteddfod, he having viisted Australia for the purpose in 1934. - There was a large attendance at the funeral yesterday afternoon of the late Mrs L. A. Solon. Wreaths were sent by the directors and executive staff of Amalgamated Theatres Ltd., the staff of State Theatre, Masterton; Regent and Cosy theatres, employees of Masterton Gas Works, girls of Hotel Midland staff and Post Office boys. The Rev. John Davie conducted a service at the Chapel and also officiated at the graveside. Messrs C. K. Long, E. R. Cross, I. Gray, G. R. Duff, N. Brewer and E. Solon acted as pall-bearers.
There are many throughout the Dominion and Australia who will regret deeply to learn of the death at Dunedin yesterday of Mr A. W. Martin, who for many years was a specialist in the cure of rupture. Mr Martin was a descendant of one of the pioneer families in the Tokomariro district and was educated in Milton. For many years he was a member of the Dunedin Orphans’ Club. He was a member of the Dunedin Bowling Club and took a great interest in all forms, of sport. Mrs Martin and a family of three are left to mourn their loss—one son, Mr Norman Martin (Brisbane) and two daughters, Mrs Oliver Gordon Cox (Roslyn) and Miss Una Martin. « Mr Walter O. Hawke, of the staff of the registrar of the Supreme Court, Palmerston North, who has been transferred to the Social Security Department in Masterton. was farewelled at a gathering of fellow officers when a presentation on behalf of the stall was made by the registrar, Mr H. B. Reid. Regret at Mr Hawke’s departure and a tribute to his efficiency as a member of the registrar's staff were expressed by Mr Reid, who said Mr Hawke's experience in interpreting the statutes would make him a valuable member of the Social Security Department. Mr Reid read a letter from Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., associating himself with the staff's good wishes for Mr. Hawke’s future.
