WORK EULOGISED

FAREWELL TO DR. A. HOSKING LAST NIGHT. INFLUENCE ON NURSES STRESSED. Dr. Archer Hosking, who will retire at the end of the month from the position of Medical Superintendent at the Masterton Hospital, was entertained at the Nurses’ Home last night by the medical practitioners and the past and present nursing staff. Among the large gathering of ex-nurses from all over New Zealand was the former matron, Miss K. I. Barnitt.

A most enjoyable concert programme was presented by the nurses and was followed by supper.

A former Sister, Mrs J. Bryce, on behalf of the nursing staff, presented Dr. Hosking with a cheque in recognition of his many years of sterling service to the hospital and of his invaluable aid to the staff. She referred to his readiness at all times to be of assistance to the nurses, and eulogised the driving force he had been in the training of nurses at the Masterton Hospital.

Miss Barnitt and several nurses also spoke, thanking Dr. Hosking for his help and advice and referred to his splendid work over a long period of years. Sincere regret was expressed at his retirement and best wishes were extended to him for the future. . The high reputation enjoyed by Masterton nurses, it was stated, was due chiefly to Dr. Hosking’s influence and training.

On behalf of the medical practitioners, Dr. N. H. Prior presented Dr Hosking with a case of pipes and a set of books. He emphasised the splendid services rendered by Dr. Hosking through the years, and dealt with the friendly relationships that had always existed between the Medical. Superintendent and his colleagues and the staff.

Dr. Hosking, who was greeted with applause, said he had spent many pleasant years at the Masterton Hospital, and his sincere thanks were due to the Matrons, nursing staffs and doctors for their splendid co-operation and assistance at all times. He went on to refer to incidents and experiences at the hospital during his term as Medical Superintendent, all of them being of deep interest and many causing considerable amusement.

It was a most enjoyable and successful gathering.
