A POPULAR CHURCHMAN

METHODISTS FAREWELL MR BATE excellent services RECOGNISED. The large attendance at a social function held last night in the Methodist Hall to farewell Mr A. E. Bate, was a tribute to the popularity of the guest of the evening and to the esteem in which he is held by the people of his church. The Rev. Fred J. Parker, who presided, after opening the gathering with devotional exercises, spoke of the necessity which called for such a gathering, the appointment of Mr A. E. Bate as one of three Youth Directors in the Methodist Church of New Zealand. In complimenting Mr Bate on his appointment, the chairman outlined something of the new policy of the church in youth matters and mentioned the fine qualities of personality and of leadership which had (narked him out for selection by the church for this high office. Mr. E. M. Hodder, one of the executive church officers, spoke for the congregation, the Rev. Hedley White, of Carterton, represented church interests outside of Masterton, while Mr F. G. Rutter, as the other executive officer, represented the other church interests, and made presentation of a leather suitcase as a' memento of Mr Bate’s association with the church. Mr Murray Daniell, representing the Bible classes of the church, in making the presentation of a gentleman’s companion toilet set, spoke of the very fine work that Mr Bate had done as a leader in the Bible class movement, and of the mark he had left on the local classes.

On rising to reply, Mr Bate was enthusiastically applauded, and spoke feelingly of the tributes paid and of his association with the work of the church during the past years, as well as of this new task to which the church had called him.

During the evening, vocal items were rendered by Miss O’Donnell, Mr. Allan Barnes and Mr H. Hall, while Mrs H. R. Keltie presented elocutionary numbers. Miss A. M. Jones, L.A.8., acted as accompaniste. The ladies of the church provided a dainty supper which brought the proceedings to a close.
