SHORTAGE OF TRADESMEN
POSITION IN THE wairarapa, WORK BEING HELD UP. Work on State houses and private buildings 'in the Wairarapa was being held up because of an acute shortage of skilled tradesmen, observed Mr J. Hanaghan, Masterton Placement Officer, today. At present ten carpenters were required for the Government houses and seven more for private work. Bricklayers, joiners and painters were also in keen demand.
The position was even worse in the South Wairarapa, particularly with regard, to State houses. Wairarapa builders could scarcely cope with the work offering, and Mr Hanaghan said he was in daily touch with his headquarters in Wellington in an effort to relieve the situation. The position, however, was equally bad in Wellington. Only one of the Australian tradesmen who recently arrived in New Zealand came to the Wairarapa where he was immediately placed in steady employment.
